Kiara Young

HU Senior to compete in Miss Alabama USA Pageant

Hampton University senior biology major Kiara Young is competing in the 2012 Miss Alabama USA Pageant on Jan. 27-28 in Montgomery, Ala. The competition is a preliminary to the Miss USA pageant. Young is currently Miss Jefferson County USA.

“This weekend I expect to meet many young, beautiful, and educated women from across the state of Alabama, while also gaining life-changing experiences that only the Miss Universe Organization can offer,” Young said.

Young is a Birmingham, Ala. native. After HU, she plans to attend Meharry Medical College with plans to become a pediatric gastroenterologist.

The Miss Alabama USA Pageant is being held in conjunction with the Miss Alabama Teen USA pageant, and is also Jan 27-28. The pageants are at the Montgomery Performing Arts Centre, and will feature contestants between the ages of 14-26, who will compete in interview, swimsuit and evening gown competitions, according to the event’s press release. They will be competing for thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes, as well as the ability to travel the state promoting the pageants and its charitable alliances.

Whoever wins the Miss Alabama competition moves on to compete in the nationally televised Miss Universe Pageant later this year. Madeline Grace Mitchell is the current Miss Alabama.

“I hope to make those at my ‘Home By the Sea proud,’” Young said, “by offering a well rounded and thorough performance as part of this pageant’s competition.”
